The Challenge Begins: Starting a Regenerative Farm with £20k

My Honest Reasons for Choosing Regenerative Farming on a Very Tight Budget

At 58 years old, my wife dropped a bomb on me. She wanted to move back to Britain. We have lived in Texas for more than 15 years. The thought of starting over in a new country at 58 was not something that appealed to me. I agreed, but only on one condition.

I told her I would make the move if I could start my own farm. For a long time, I have thought about going back to my roots. I grew up on a small farm in a very remote area. I missed the lifestyle. I missed the satisfaction of a hard day’s work and walking out my front door to be at work. After a long career in the energy sector, I wanted to build something meaningful.

So The Challenge was born: build Beagle Rock Farms from scratch using regenerative farming practices with a strict £20,000 startup budget (excluding land) and just 5 years to make it a viable business.

This is the beginning of my honest, transparent journey into regenerative farming in the UK.

From the very start, this project will document everything — every pound spent, every decision made, every success and every setback. You will follow the full process: the research, the planning, searching for suitable land, soil building, planting soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, keeping bees for honey and pollination, and eventually creating artisan products such as jams, infused honeys, sauces, and more.

Regenerative farming is at the heart of Beagle Rock Farms. I believe it is the future of sustainable agriculture, focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and working with nature instead of against it. (Read more in my article: What Is Regenerative Farming?)

One of the encouraging aspects of starting this type of farm in Britain right now is the support available through government schemes. The Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) run by DEFRA rewards farmers for practices that improve soil health and biodiversity — many of which align perfectly with regenerative methods.

This will not be a highlight reel. You will see the real challenges of starting a farm at 58, the financial realities, the steep learning curve, and the day-to-day reality of building a regenerative farm in Britain.

Welcome to The Challenge — the raw, unfiltered story of starting Beagle Rock Farms.

I hope this journey inspires others who are thinking about making a big life change later in life. Follow along as I document every step of building a regenerative farm in the UK.
