The Challenge: Starting regenerative farming from scratch in the UK at 58

Welcome to Beagle Rock Farms

At 58 years old, I left Texas with my British wife to start a regenerative soft fruit farm in the UK with a strict £20,000 budget and a 5-year challenge to make it work.

This website is my completely transparent journal of the entire journey — from research and planning to planting strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants, keeping bees, and creating value-added products like jams, infused honeys, and sauces.

Why I’m Doing This

After a long career in the energy sector, I wanted to return to my roots. I grew up on a small farm and missed the satisfaction of working the land with my own hands. More importantly, I wanted to prove it’s never too late to build something meaningful — even later in life and on a tight budget.

I chose regenerative farming because it makes both environmental and financial sense. By focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and working with nature, I believe we can reduce long-term input costs, build resilience against UK weather challenges, and create a more sustainable and profitable small farm.

This is not a polished farming blog. It’s a real-time, honest documentary of starting a regenerative farm from scratch in a new country at age 58. You’ll see the wins, the mistakes, the money spent, the research, and the day-to-day reality.

Here you’ll find:

  • In-depth guides on regenerative farming practices
  • My ongoing planning and land research
  • The full story of The Challenge
  • Practical lessons as I build Beagle Rock Farms

Whether you’re interested in regenerative agriculture in the UK, considering starting a small farm later in life, or simply curious about the process — I hope you’ll follow along.

The challenge is real. The journey starts now.
